It's been quite awhile since we had family pictures taken. They were long overdue! We had pictures taken at the JCPenney Portrait studio on Saturday, July 1st. They turned out great and the photographer managed to get everyone looking at the camera and smiling, which was a miracle.
On Monday, our family went up to the North Pole, an amusement park near Pikes Peak. There was quite a lot of traffic on the way up because of cars going to drive up Pikes Peak, but the amusement park itself wasn't terribly busy. I didn't get any pictures but we had a great time! Lene came with us and it was her first time going. She liked it a lot and wants to go again with the kids soon.
Tuesday was the Fourth of July, and we went to a place called Rock Ledge Farm right next to Garden of the Gods. It's a historic farm with several houses that were built in the 1800's and other buildings like a barn, a blacksmith shop, a general store, etc. We got to visit the various buildings and enjoy different demonstrations and activities at each. The kids played lots of old fashioned games in the barn and participated in a watermelon seed spitting contest outside. We took a picnic lunch and ate on the lawn while a brass band played patriotic songs. After the band, there were speeches by George Washington, Abraham Lincoln (who recited the Gettysburg Address), and other famous
American leaders. We enjoyed a slice of pie and some lemonade afterward and toured one of the mansion houses on the farm. It was a very fun and memorable way to spend the day, and we will certainly be going back for events in the future.
That evening, we drove downtown to Memorial Park to watch fireworks. We were on the fence about it until the very last, but in the end we decided to brave crowds and unfamiliar territory to make some memories. We were able to park not too far away and the kids enjoyed getting out and seeing the fireworks up close. It was a perfect ending to a wonderful weekend of family time.
